Earlier today, Attorney General Jeff Sessions delivered remarks at the White House daily press conference concerning sanctuary jurisdictions, and enforcement of federal immigration laws. AG Sessions stated that State and local governments seeking Justice Department grants must certify they are in compliance with 8 U.S.C. Section 1373 to receive the funding. Sessions stated that compliance with federal immigration laws will be a prerequisite for states and localities that want to receive grants from the department’s Office of Justice Programs. Additionally, Sessions said that jurisdictions not only could lose future grant funding for non-compliance, but also have awarded funding rescinded. This announcement reiterates the “crackdown” initiated by the Obama administration in 2016, with a vow that additional aggressive actions could be in the works. We are continuing to track developments on this issue, and will provide future updates as more specifics become available.
